Fun Experiments in Light and Colour

Last year I fell into a bit of an obsession with how light is comprised and the way colours can play off different lights and began to research anaglyphics and polarised light, the 2 ways 3D has been represented in the past on 2D planes.
One path led to thinking up cool ways you could make adjustable screen doors or window shading with just 2 panes of polarised glass, and the other led me to art!

I began toying with concepts that would work in an anaglyphic mode, and which colour combination would work best in aesthetic and separations, those old-timey 3D pictures where there is just a subtle difference between channels was a bit overdone, I wanted something exciting, but in the same theme….perhaps a 2 step animation style route.

Luckily I had earlier finished 2 paintings of a frontal tiger in 2 different poses but able to be size matched and run them into their own channel mixed by multiplication, and exported them to a PNG and uploaded to Design by Humans.

Et voila http://www.designbyhumans.com/shop/t-shirt/mushin-ire-channel-remix/28995/

Now I need to see if this was not all in vain, as the separations worked in photoshop simulations and through coloured cellophane, but I had no idea if it would be effective in a real world existence, so bought myself one.

Neato! The print came out really well, but I could tell straight away there would be an issue because of how a DTG printer represented the blue up close, being a fine application of a different hue instead of a solid print of the exact blue I need, I now understand a 2 pass screenprint of the respective colour channels would work the best, but I figure it should be good enough, at least as a test, so I bought myself a colour changing LED bulb to see for myself….

Badadadada drum roll:

Blue Light

This the the same shirt when viewed under blue light with no external leaks from any white light sources, the blue has been swallowed up and reflected back quite well, revealing the passive tiger perfectly.

Red Light

The same shirt again when viewed under red light. The camera was having a lot of trouble picking up just a red spectrum, but rest assured in real life it looked very clean and crisp, that faint blue reflecting back a bit more light than what was planned, but still not a big deal.

Rage Instinct 2 - Two colour alternating halftone pattern for clothing that works really well filling the print area on any colour of substrate.

"Rage Instinct" art reworked into a 2 colour, alternating halftone for rich texture and a better fit on multiple shirt colours without being too bold or bright. I really like how you can keep intricate work intact but more muted with halftones, so will probably be experimenting with them a lot.
Available on shirts, tanks and long-sleeve at Design by Humans.

Mushin/Burning Ire Anaglyphic Remix
Two independent paintings fused on separate channels gives an abstract quality when viewed normally, with both individual works still visible exclusively when viewed under red and blue light in a subtractive setting, like the real world, or through red and blue filters in an additive setting like on a computer screen.

An anaglyphic fusion of my paintings, “Mushin- No Mind" and "Burning Ire,” each image visible separately under either blue or red lighting, as is evident in this simulation
The fusion of these paintings in the anaglyphic mode is analogous to the passive face we wear in public and in general, only allowing our rage and passions to boil to the surface under specific conditions.

It is available on shirts, prints and phone casings at Design by Humans

Mushin(No Mind) Updated

Mushin is a Zen expression meaning the mind without mind and is also referred to as the state of “no-mindness”. That is, a mind not fixed or occupied by thought or emotion and thus open to everything. It is somewhat analogous to flow experienced by artists deeply in a creative process.
